Food for Thought zero waste emporium receives eco award!

The refill shop in Wellingborough was named Best Sustainable Business in Northamptonshire the Muddy Stilettos Award, the first year with this eco-friendly category.

Readers of the Muddy Stilettos lifestyle website nominated and voted for their favourite independent businesses across 27 different lifestyle categories to celebrate the best of local, independent businesses in Northamptonshire.

Owner Kerry Leese received the award on Wednesday during a ceremony at the illustrious Holdenby House. More than 500,000 people nominated more than 75,000 businesses in the first round of the awards.

The zero waste shop was opened by Kerry in December 2020 with the help of family, friends and supporters in order to reduce single-use plastic pollution and promote more sustainable ways of grocery shopping. She was joined by her assistant and right hand woman Alice, in July 2021.

Since opening Food for Thought has developed its range to include over 600 food, cleaning & personal care items without unnecessary packaging, many of which are available for refill & are from local suppliers. Customers bring their own containers or use cleaned, donated containers and get the amount they need.

Kerry said: “I’m so thankful to our fantastic customers for this incredible accolade! We love that we get to be part of their lives and help them to achieve their goals of cutting waste whether at home or at work.

“We all have to do something about plastic pollution, the climate crisis and we’re always thinking of ways to help our customers like our new click and collect service. It’s so overwhelming and scary, it’s hard to know where to start. But it’s about bringing fun too, if it’s more enjoyable, we’re more likely to do it! We have the best customers who are so supportive and often love a chat! We get to talk to lovely people about food so what more could I want?”

Kerry’s advice for being more sustainable?

“The main thing is that we start! Concentrate on what we CAN achieve, which together is way more than on our own.

“After so many hurdles in order to get open & all that’s happened since, it’s really hard. Like so many businesses we’re struggling to get the message out. But this award and the recognition from our customers really gives us hope that we might be able to survive. Food for Thought isn’t just benefiting our customers but our local environment too so I’m doing everything I can to ensure that that happens.”
