LOCAL FOCUS: Introducing Boughton House…..

Boughton House, the Northamptonshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch is one of Britain’s grandest and best-preserved stately homes. As well as the splendours of the House, visitors and event goers can also enjoy the revitalised 18th-century landscaped gardens, woodlands and the grand country park.  We normally open at Easter and during August for guided tours but are delighted to welcome groups and events throughout the by appointment.

At Boughton you can also see one of Britain’s most outstanding collections of fine art, furniture, tapestries, porcelain and carpets. Visitors can view a magnificent range of paintings by great artists, including The Adoration of the Shepherds by El Greco, Gainsborough’s portrait of Elizabeth Montagu, grisailles and portraits by Van Dyck, and Breaking Cover by John Wootton.   Boughton also has some of the best-preserved baroque State Rooms in the British Isles. Here you can walk through grand apartments of contrasting character decorated in extravagant yet elegant taste with the finest artworks of the House’s golden era.

Once you’ve had your tour of the House, you can step out into the surrounding country park. Its tranquil delights have been carefully restored over the last decade, and now there are wide sculptured lawns to survey, serene lakes, waterways, woods and avenues of trees to be strolled down.  Events such as the Greenbelt Festival have found a natural home at Boughton within the peace and tranquillity of the parkland.

A large country estate surrounds and supports the House, with a variety of commercial operations including unique and exquisite country rental properties whose high standards of refurbishment and exceptional countryside locations offer the whole package when it comes to pursuing the rural idyll. The farming side is represented by dairy and beef herds, breeding and finishing sheep, and arable operations as well as important conservation areas carefully managed to encourage priority species to settle.  The commercial property portfolio has provided homes for a surprisingly varied selection of 75 different companies have already made their home here. 2,300 acres of woodland of mostly native trees include large areas of semi natural ancient woodland rich in wildlife and from which we careful about how we harvest our wood so as to create a sustainable source of timber while protecting these important habitats and we can deliver seasoned firewood direct to your home, as well as woodchip for our combined heat and power units (CHPs).
